General Education Program

Philosophy and Religion majors are permitted to count 9 hours from the following courses, which are required for the major, toward satisfying GEP requirements. This would result in three of these four GEP categories being satisfied.

Freshman Experience

UNIV 1100 - First Year Experience: University Foundations

Credit Hours Required in the Major (33 Credit Hours)

Required Courses

These courses are designed to provide an understanding of basic issues regarding the nature of knowledge and reason, and introduce secular and religious approaches to these issues. Students also aquire familiarity with basic philosophical and theological texts. It is recommended that students take these courses before taking other courses in the major. 12 credit hours.
PHIL 1105 - Rhetoric and Reasoning
PHIL 2200 - Introduction to Philosophy
PHIL 2230 - Philosophy of Religion
RELI 2230 - History of Christian Thought
These courses investigate how various religions view each other, and how their disagreements can best be resolved or understood.
PHIL 2284 - Asian Philosophy
RELI 3300 - Judaism, Christianity, and Islam
An emphasis of the program is to gain understanding of the intersection between religion, philosophy, ethics and the political sphere. These courses examine the role of religious and secular approaches to the state and to the common good. 6 credit hours.
PHIL 2320 - Ethics in Public/Private Life
PHIL 3360 - Political Philosophy
These courses are designed to enable students to bring together and to integrate various elements of the program. In the event that PHIL4400 satisfies the Senior Seminar requirement, it must be taken to fulfill that requirement. 6 credit hours.
PHIL 4200 - Metaphysics and Epistemology
PHIL 4400 - Senior Project in Philosophy and Religion

Religious Texts (3 Credit Hours)

These courses introduce students to the content of major religious texts as well as some of the major theories and schools regarding their proper interpretation. Choose one from among the following. 3 credit hours.

Major Electives (3 Credit Hours)

Student may choose any course from the following to complete the requirements for the major. 3 credit hours.

Any 3000 or 4000 level RELI or PHIL course not being used to fulfill another requirement.
