The Associate of Individualized Studies degree (AIS) at Shawnee State University allows you to formulate your own individualized program of study based upon specific criteria. The goal of this degree is to permit the student, under the guidance of faculty advisors, to combine selected courses in academic and/or technical areas that may not meet the degree requirements for Shawnee State’s Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of Applied Science, or Associate of Applied Business degrees.

In certifying AIS students for graduation, the following conditions must be met:

1. Application forms completed.
2. Completion of 60 semester hours of 1000-level or above coursework. 
3. Completion of 15 semester hours after admission to the program.
4. Minimum of two/maximum of four concentration areas.
5. Completion of minimum set of General Education Requirements as outlined below.
6. Completion of UNIV1100 (FYE) if enrolling Fall 2016 or later.
7. All changes to original program approved by advisors and the Dean.
8. Final cumulative grade point average must be 2.0 or above.

The minimum set of general education requirements for the AIS is as follows:

• English Composition or a combination of English and Oral Communications (6 semester hours).
• Quantitative Reasoning (3 semester hours)
• (9-12 semesters hours) from three different categories of the Foundational Level of the University’s General Education Program Requirements by Content Category . The Foundational Level includes the following categories: Engaged citizenry, Ethical Insight and Reasoning, Global Perspectives, Historical Perspectives, Human Behavior, Literature, Natural Sciences, and Oral Communications.

Note: If you plan to transfer to another state university in Ohio in order to pursue a four-year degree program, you should consider completing the general education transfer module as outlined in the SSU online catalog.
