Social Work Minor

Social work has evolved as an established profession that has the capacity to address both individual and social issues.  Social work often differs from study in other social science areas given the primary focus of the practical application of “professional” knowledge, values and skills.  Social work draws from a variety of fields of study including sociology, psychology, economics, political science, biology and history.

Students majoring in any discipline may choose to minor in social work, which allows them to build a concentration in a behavioral science that enhances the marketability of their degree and prepares for graduate school.

Students must complete 21 hours of coursework to fulfill the social work minor.  Courses with grades below a C will not be counted toward the completion of the minor in social work.  Courses taken on a pass/no-credit basis are not applicable.  Any variation from the program described requires advisor and chair approval.  Students are encouraged to take MATH 1500, Principles of Statistics, as well as coursework in sociology, psychology, economics, political science, human biology and American history.  A student cannot count more than 9 hours of their minor towards any major.
