Mathematical Sciences BS

This four-year program develops computational skills and conceptual understanding needed to use mathematics well and fosters the ability to learn mathematics and other technical material independently. Graduates of this program should be able to communicate technical concepts effectively and should have a solid understanding of the core subjects of undergraduate mathematics as well as some more specialized work at a more advanced level.

People with degrees in mathematical sciences enter a wide variety of professions, including careers in business and finance, computer science, law, industry, and education. The mathematical sciences major prepares students for careers in which analytic, problem-solving, and quantitative skills are of central importance.

The study of mathematics is an appropriate foundation for the pursuit of a master’s degree or doctorate degree in a variety of areas including business administration, computer science, economics, engineering, and law. Students from Shawnee State’s program have entered graduate programs in biostatistics, computer science, education, mathematics, and meteorology.

The curriculum emphasizes the interdisciplinary nature of mathematics and its relationship to other disciplines as introduced by the general education program. The learning experiences gained in the liberal arts and science courses are used as a foundation upon which the mathematical sciences build and expand, showing that mathematics is not isolated but is part of an overall knowledge base.
