General Education Program 34 Hours

 

Philosophy and Religion majors are required to take PHIL3320 Ethics in Public and Private Life to satisfy the GEP’s Ethics requirement. See the General Education Program for further information about the GEP.

Required Foundation Courses (15 Credit Hours)


These courses are designed to provide an understanding of basic issues regarding the nature of knowledge and reason, and introduce secular and religious approaches to these issues. Students also acquire familiarity with basic philosophical and theological texts. It is recommended that students take these courses before taking other courses in the major.

Interreligious Dialogue (6 Credit Hours)


These courses investigate how various religions view each other, and how their disagreements can best be resolved or understood.

Philosophy, Religion and Society (6 Credit Hours)


An emphasis of the program is to gain understanding of the intersection between religion, philosophy, ethics and the political sphere. These courses examine the role of religious and secular approaches to the state and to the common good.  Choose one course from among the following in addition to PHIL2230: Social and Political Philosophy.

Religious Texts (6 Credit Hours)


These courses introduce students to the content of major religious texts as well as some of the major theories and schools regarding their proper interpretation.  Choose two from among the following. It is recommended that students take either RELI2201: Old Testament Survey or RELI2202: New Testament Survey before taking RELI2203: The Qur’an.

Senior Integration (3 Credit Hours)


This course is designed to enable students to bring together and to integrate various elements of the program.  In the event that it may satisfy the Senior Seminar requirement, it must be taken to fulfill that requirement.

Major Electives (3 Credit Hours)


Student may choose any course from the categories above or the following to complete the requirements for the major.

Special Notes


All Philosophy and Religion students must earn a “C’ or higher in all required courses for the major.
