Social Science - Integrated Social Studies with Adolescent to Young Adult (Grades 7-12) Licensure BA

The Integrated Social Studies with Adolescent to Young Adult (Grades 7-12) Licensure BA prepares students for careers in teaching Social Sciences and History to students in grades 7 through 12. Subject ares include Government, Civics, Social Studies, US and World History, Geography and other relevant subjects.

In additoin to completing Secondary Education Major requirements for licensure, graduates in the Social Science AYA program should be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of the relevant content for their subject areas.
  • Communicate this knowledge clearly and effectively
  • Engage students at these grade levels in critical thinking about the issues raised in their respective Social Science areas.

Degree Requirements


General Education Program 40 Hours

The Social Science component and the Non-Western Cultural Perspectives component of the GEP are satisfied by the requirements of this degree. Further information is in the General Education Program .

 
First Year Experience: University Foundations 1 Hour
Social Studies Courses 42 Hours
Social Studies Electives 6 Hours
Professional Education Core 12 Hours
Adolescent to Young Adult Courses 21 Hours

Total Hours Required: 122 Hours

Professional Education Core (12 Hours)


To receive credit towards the major students must achieve a grade of “C” or higher in this component. A 3.0 GPA is required in the Professional Education requirements.

Related Studies Component (9 Hours)


A grade of “C” or higher is required in this component.

Special Notes:


  • Completion of PRAXIS I or ACT tests with sufficient scores is required prior to taking any education courses EDUC 1115 or higher. See the Department of Teacher Education for further details on test score requirements.
  • The Social Science component and three hours of the Non-Western Cultural Perspectives component of the GEP are satisfied by the requirements of this degree. PSYC 1101 and PHIL 3320 are required in the GEP for the major.
  • EDUC 2230, 2240, 2245, 2248, and EDIS 2250 should be taken prior to or with EDAE 3285.
