The Department of Social Sciences’ history program provides students with a general understanding of the development of American, European, Asian, African, and Middle Eastern civilizations. Special attention is given to the problems of modernization and the increasing connections between societies around the globe.

The program encourages you to develop your analytical capacities, research skills, and writing talents, which, in turn, stand you in good stead as you pursue a career in law, education, journalism, government service, or the private sector.

The courses you choose to meet the requirements for the history major may not count as General Education Program courses. The chairperson must approve any variation from the required program. See your advisor for further information.

The Department of History has established the following learning outcomese for the History Major.

 

Upon completing the requirements of the Bachelor of Arts in History, graduates of Shawnee State University will be able to demonstrate the following skills, knowledge and abilities:

 

• Historical Knowledge

 

Demonstrate a broad knowledge of the human experience, historical events, periods, and controversies in four geographic content areas:  1. the Americas, 2. Europe, 3. India and Asia, and 4. the Middle East and Africa;

 

• Historical Methods and Critical Thinking

 

Apply historical methods to critically evaluate the record of the past (primary sources) and how historians and others have interpreted the historical record (secondary sources); Graduates will demonstrate the ability to collect, sift, organize, question, synthesize, and interpret complex historical materials and conduct ethical historical enquiry;

 

• Historiographical Literacy

 

Identify and describe the contours and stakes of conversations among historians within defined historiographical fields.
