Nursing Bachelor of Science

The School of Nursing promotes the mission of Shawnee State University, the College of Professional Studies, and the profession of nursing. The School supports this mission by adhering to the philosophy and its curriculum, which implies responsibility for development, implementation, and revision. Faculty endeavor to help students develop self, critical thinking, and skills to enhance their function as bachelor prepared graduates who contribute to both the profession and society.

The bachelor of science in nursing program prepares the student for professional nursing practice in a variety of settings.  Graduates of the program are prepared for leadership positions and for graduate study. Clinical experiences are provided in a variety of health care settings, such as hospitals, health departments, clinics, nursing homes, mental health centers, and other health-related community agencies.

In addition to achieving the professional goals of the program, students also complete a liberal arts education described elsewhere in this catalog as the General Education Program (GEP).

The Baccalaureate of Nursing Program provides two pathways for the individual pursuing the Bachelor of Science in Nursing; the pre-licensure BSN pathway and the RN-BSN pathway.  Applications are available online via the SSU School of Nursing webpage.  Students who have completed the application are considered for acceptance on the basis of space available in the program and the academic qualifications of the student.

 

End of Program Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Synthesize theories and concepts from liberal education to build an understanding of the human experience.
  2. Demonstrate leadership and communication skills to effectively facilitate client safety and quality outcomes within the context of the inter-professional team.
  3. Integrate current evidence, clinical reasoning, and perspective the client in the delivery of compassionate care.
  4. Integrate knowledge and skills from information and client care technologies in the delivery of safe and effective care.
  5. Demonstrate basic knowledge of healthcare policy, finance, regulatory agencies, healthcare trends, and the role of the professional nurse to influence change in the healthcare system.
  6. Use intra and interprofessional communication and collaborative skills to deliver evidence based, client-centered care.
  7. Apply the nursing process to diverse populations to manage alterations in health, promote wellness, and reduce health disparities.
  8. Evaluate client-centered care based on the ANA Code of Ethics and the Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional
  9. Evaluate professional nursing care for the client throughout the lifespan and within various healthcare environments.

Pre-Licensure BSN Path


Admission Requirements

Admission is determined on a competitive basis. The total number of students admitted to the program is based upon available facilities and faculty. Students are admitted into the program in the fall semester.

Criteria for admission:

  • Official high school transcript denoting high school graduation or official GED test score transcript.
  • A college GPA of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) at the end of the semester in which application is made.
  • A grade of “C” or higher in all pre-nursing course work, which includes the first two semesters and the summer session of the pre-nursing curriculum. (Note: Students may repeat any required science course only one time to achieve a grade of “C” or better. Science courses must be taken within 5 years of application to be considered during the admission process.)

To complete the admission process once a student has been accepted, the student must present to the nursing secretary prior to the first day of class:

  • Completed Confidential Physical Form obtained from the Nursing Department.
  • Current CPR Basic Life Support certification.
  • State and Federal BCIs
  • Drug Screening
  • Proof of influenza vaccination

International students must demonstrate a minimum TOEFL score of 84, with a minimum English-speaking score of 26 to be considered for admission.

Accreditation

The Pre-Licensure BSN Path is fully approved by the Ohio Board of Nursing and accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).

Program Requirements

The Department of Nursing considers a grade of “C” (2.0) as the minimum passing grade for all required nursing and non-nursing courses. Courses completed with less than a “C” will result in academic dismissal from the program. Readmission to the nursing program is determined by the Department of Nursing policies as printed in the current Department of Nursing BSN Student Handbook.

Current CPR Basic Life Support certification, physical exam, which includes a TB skin test, immunizations, and Hepatitis B; state and federal BCIs, urine drug screen, and proof of influenza vaccination are required and verified prior to enrollment in clinical nursing courses.  TB skin test, state and federal BCIs, urine drug screen, and proof of influenza vaccination are required annually.

Students are responsible for verifying they have met degree requirements for graduation.

RN-BSN Pathway


The RN-BSN completion path provides the associate degree or diploma-prepared registered nurse (RN) an opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (B.S.N.). The curriculum is designed to enhance and advance the student’s professional nursing career. For the qualified student who is already a licensed registered nurse, the RN-BSN path offers flexible scheduling, with all of the nursing coursework available through distance learning and use of clinical preceptors.

Accreditation

The RN-BSN path is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).

Admission Requirements

The total number of students admitted to the program is based upon available facilities and faculty.  Students are admitted into the program through a rolling admission process.

Criteria for admission:

  • A transcript from a completed associate degree or diploma nursing program.
  • A college GPA of 2.5 or better (on a 4.0 scale).
  • A current, non-restricted RN license.

 

Program Requirements

The Department of Nursing considers a grade of “C” (2.0) as the minimum passing grade for all required nursing and non-nursing courses.  Courses completed with less than a “C” must be repeated and a grade of “C” or higher received.  Readmission to the nursing program is determined by the Department of Nursing policies as printed in the current Department of Nursing Student Handbook.

Guidelines for use of clinical preceptors are available in the Department of Nursing office.

Students are responsible for verifying they have met degree requirements for graduation.
