The nature of the Master of Science in Mathematics degree is the advanced study of mathematical concepts appropriate for individuals who wish to teach mathematics in college level positions that do not require a doctoral degree.  This program is also appropriate for high school teachers who seek to become qualified to teach college-level mathematics courses as part of a dual credit course program in high school.  The high school teachers may complete the program and earn their M.S. in Mathematical Sciences degree or complete 18 credit hours if they have a prior masters degree in another content area. 

For degree-seeking students, 36 hours across the 5000 and 6000 levels is required.  In addition to completing 15 credit hours from the core courses, students complete 12 credit hours of mathematical electives and 9 credit hours that lead up to a culminating applied-research thesis.

Applications are accepted and reviewed throughout the year.  Cohorts begin their sequence of classes in the summer term; however, students may begin the program in the fall or spring semester. An application packet, which is first submitted to the Graduate Center,  must include:

• Completed application
• Appropriate application fee
• Transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended
• Resume or Curriculum Vitae
• Two letters of recommendation
• Personal statement/professional goals

Applicants will have to meet the requirements for admission to the Graduate Center, in addition to the program requirements:

• A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in mathematical sciences or related field
  • Successful completion of the calculus sequence ( B’s or higher in each course)
  • Successful completion of three proof-based mathematics courses (B’s or higher in each course)

Applications will be screened for completeness and fulfillment of minimum requirements by the Graduate Director.  Students who have not taken the appropriate mathematics courses, or did not earn the minimum grade requirement, are encouraged to apply and may be conditionally accepted.

The program is presented in a blended format, and lectures are delivered mostly online.  Two on-campus sessions are required each semester.  In addition to attending the two on-campus sessions, students must have the ability to work independently and collaboratively and have access to, and be competent in, the use of technology.  Students must have reliable internet access, and be proficient in web-based communication.
