History BA

The Department of Social Sciences’ history program provides students with a general understanding of the development of American, western, and select non-western civilizations. Special attention is given to the problems of modernization and the increasing connections between societies around the globe.

The program encourages you to develop your analytical capacities, research skills, and writing talents, which, in turn, stand you in good stead as you pursue a career in law, education, journalism, government service, or the private sector.

The courses you choose to meet the requirements for the history major may not count as General Education Program courses. The chairperson must approve any variation from the required program. See your advisor for further information.

History Survey Courses (12 Hours)

Choose two sequences. Courses in excess may be counted as electives. To receive credit toward the major students must achieve a grade of “C” or higher.

History Upper-Division Courses (27 Hours)

Choose a total of 27 credit hours from the following list. At least two courses must be drawn from each of the three categories. Courses chosen from this upper-division course list beyond the 27 required hours may be used as electives. To receive credit toward the major students must achieve a grade “C” or higher.

Elective Courses (51 Hours)

Students majoring in history are free to select elective courses from any of the University’s offerings that may be beneficial. See your faculty advisor for course suggestions and information on minors in economics, geography, political science, psychology, sociology, or women’s studies.

Special Notes

HIST 1199, HIST 2299, HIST 3399, and HIST 4499 (special topics courses), with the authorization of the history program coordinator or the social science department chairperson, can be substituted for courses required for the major.
To receive credit towards the major students must achieve a grade of “C” or higher in all required history courses.
History courses taken on a pass/no-credit or audit basis will not count toward the major.

Special Notes

Students must complete—at Shawnee State— at least 12 credit hours in their majors. The 12 hours must be taken at the 3000 or 4000 level. In the case of the BS natural science, at least 8 of the 12 upper division hours must be in the first concentration.
General Electives Elective hours are not limited to any particular area of study and can be earned in science to enhance the major or to complete requirements for a minor. Courses from all departments of the University can be used to satisfy the electives requirements. Electives should include courses in the arts and humanities. Coherent groups of courses are encouraged and should be chosen with the student’s career objectives and personal interests in mind. Consultation with your faculty advisor is highly recommended so that electives can be an important component of your educational experience.
