The Associate of Technical Study (A.T.S.) degree program provides the student the opportunity to develop a tailor-made program of instruction, which may include already learned skills, life experiences, and course credits from appropriate trade schools, career centers, colleges, and universities. Such program needs may not necessarily fit into traditional university program offerings.
Admission Requirements
Admission requirements will adhere to the full admission requirement of Shawnee State University. Upon application, the student will be advised and counseled in a program which matches the student’s interest and aptitude in so far as possible. High school records, equivalency exams, and English and math course placement test scores will be evaluated. Students may apply for the A.T.S. program by presenting their intent to the appropriate department chairperson, who will assist them in planning an individualized program of study. The program may be denied if:
- Standards are not comparable to other technologies offered at Shawnee State University.
- The proposed A.T.S. program duplicates an existing technology offered at Shawnee State University.
For situations in which the University does not offer technical courses needed to fulfill the A.T.S. degree requirements, cooperative arrangements may be entered into with approved public and private colleges, as well as accredited correspondence schools, vocational centers, and schools conducted by business and industry. Transfer credits, credits by examination, or credit by any other acceptable method in current use at Shawnee State University may be granted.
Graduation Requirements
Graduation requirements for the A.T.S. degree program will adhere to the same requirements of any technical program at Shawnee State University.
- Minimum of 60 semester credit hours of coursework.
- Minimum of 19 semester credit hours in general education, including 6 semester credit hours in English, 3 semester hours of mathematics at or above MATH 1020, 9 semester hours total from 3 different areas of the Foundational level of the University’s General Education Program as approved by the student’s faculty advisor.
- Minimum of 12 semester hours in industrial and engineering technology core courses as approved by the student’s faculty advisor.
- Degree Concentration:
A.T.S. Type A: Minimum of 30 semester hours in industrial and engineering technology studies of which 15 are to be concentrated in a single discipline. This is the area of study where A.T.S. students will have the greatest input to define their occupational goals.
A.T.S. Type B: Maximum of 30 semester hours in industrial and engineering technology related studies undertaken at other institutions of higher education, vocational centers, career centers (Adult Workforce Education – AWE), Ohio Career Technical Credit Transfer (CT2) initiative, DD214 reports, or other educational enterprises such as apprenticeship training.
- Minimum of 2.00 grade point average overall.
- Minimum of 30 semester credit hours of supervised coursework after acceptance into the A.T.S. program.
- Maximum of 12 semester credit hours earned through portfolio assessment.
Initial Counseling Procedure
A student’s interest in pursuing the A.T.S. degree will begin with the application procedure by first being directed to the chairperson, Department of Industrial and Engineering Technologies for tentative program approval. Students who plan to use the life experiences or other non-collegiate work as part of their A.T.S. degree must enroll in the course ETCO 1001 Technical Portfolio Development (1 cr. hr.).
