The Department of Mathematical Sciences provides Shawnee State’s general education students with exposure to mathematical thinking, processes, and beauty that invigorate their minds as well as being applicable in their lives. The Department provides educational experiences for students who wish to specialize in mathematics and develops additional mathematical skills to support students in a variety of academic programs.

In addition to close faculty-student working relations, the Department features an extensive tutoring program and use of technology in the curriculum.

The degrees offered by the Department of Mathematical Sciences provide a broad intellectual foundation in undergraduate mathematics, fosters reasoning and problem-solving skills, and provides the opportunity to combine interest in mathematics with preparation for a variety of career options.

Each of the Department’s baccalaureate programs require a senior research project which allows students to work closely with a team of faculty to study a mathematical topic in depth. The senior research project is designed to be an integrative and capstone experience and results in the development of a senior paper and presentation.

Each of the programs is described below in more detail. If you are interested in a degree in mathematics, you are encouraged to contact the Department at 740.351.3301 for additional information. Mathematical sciences faculty look forward to showing you what Shawnee State University has to offer.

General Education Mathematics Requirements

In general, students may satisfy the mathematics component (Quantitative Reasoning - 3 hours,  See General Education Requirements by Content Category) by completing one of the following courses:

  • ETCO 1120 Intro to STEM Computer Programming (CX) (3)
  • MATH 1000 Reasoning with Mathematics (3)
  • MATH 1000A Reasoning with Mathematics Plus (4)
  • MATH 1100 Mathematics Core Course (3)
  • MATH 1200 College Algebra (3)
  • MATH 1200A College Algebra Plus (5)
  • MATH 1250 Trigonometry (3)
  • MATH 1170 Applied Finite Mathematics (3)
  • MATH 1900 Brief Calculus with Applications (4)
  • MATH 2110 Calculus 1 (4)
  • PHIL 1105 Introduction to Logic (3)
  • STAT 1150 Principles of Statistics (3)
  • STAT 1150A Principles of Statistics Plus (5)
  • STAT 1800 Business Statistics (4)
  • STAT 1800A Business Statistics Plus (5)
  • STAT 2500 Statistics 1 (3)

However, some academic programs may require a specific MATH/STAT course to satisfy the General Education Program requirements. Students should check with their faculty advisor before registering for a MATH/STAT course to see if it is appropriate to their program and that the course prerequisites have been fulfilled.

Entrance into Mathematics Courses

The mathematics placement policies direct you into the University curriculum and ensure that you register for courses that match your level of academic preparedness for college-level coursework.

All first-time, degree-seeking students are placed by their ACT or SAT scores for mathematics. Students without these scores must partipate in the placement proces, as must students entering the University with credits from other colleges or universities who lack transferable mathematics credits. More details about the placement system can be accessed by contacting the Student Success Center, (740) 351-3594. Students who feel their placement test score is not indicative of their abilities in mathematics or feel they were placed into a course level too low should appeal their placement at the earliest possible date to the Department of Mathematical Sciences (740) 351-3301.
