ETPL 6800 - MS ResearchThe purpose of this course is to complete a research project with broad applicability, contributing valuable advanced research in the plastic engineering technology program and validate the student as master practitioners. In constructing the thesis, the student will attempt to prove or disprove a hypothesis, and conclusions must be backed by extensive research and a thoughtful learned description of how you get there. This process begins early in the degree program, allowing multiple semesters to conduct research in cooperation with the thesis advisor or thesis committee members. Students may give a research proposal seminar once during the program period. The time to choose to do this is up to the student and advisor or thesis committee. Usually, this will be in the second or beginning of the third semester. The preparation and defense of the thesis is the culminating experience in the program. Students are expected to work with a high level of self-motivation. Successful students exercise initiative and exhibit strong communication skills in working with their advisors and committee members. Weekly or bi-weekly meetings will be held to discuss progress and review submitted documents. Once the research and necessary analysis and results compilation are completed, then individual thesis chapters will be written and revised iteratively until both agree that the document is ready for submission to the thesis committee. If the committee agrees, then a defense of the thesis will be held. Upon successful completion of the thesis, the in-progress grade received will be converted to passing grade.
