EDEC 5477 - Physical & Cognitive Development of 4th and 5th Grade LearnersAs part of the Early Childhood Generalist Endorsement, this course equips post-baccalaureate early childhood educators to teach at the fourth and fifth grade levels by exploring physical and cognitive development. Students explore evidence-based strategies for designing instructional activities and assessments that are developmentally appropriate and reflective of Ohio’s Learning Standards and the Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE) Standards. The course facilitates teacher’s abilities to create engaging learning environments for fourth and fifth grade students, maximizing the use of cooperative learning activities and appropriate educational technology. Critical thinking, problem solving, and inquiry-based teaching and learning are explored at the fourth and fifth grade development levels , as well as diagnostic techniques as they apply to the fourth and fifth grade setting. Candidates apply the knowledge and skills obtained from this course in a planned sequence of professional field experiences with young adolescents in a fourth and fifth grade setting under the supervision of qualified university and school-based faculty.
