EDEC 4479 - Mathematics and Science Methods for Teaching 4th and 5th Grade Students

As part of the Early Childhood Generalist Endorsement, this course equips post-baccalaureate early childhood educators to teach mathematics and science at the fourth and fifth grade levels. Teachers explore evidence-based strategies for designing instructional activities and assessments that are reflective of Ohio’s Learning Standards and the Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE) Standards. The course facilitates teacher’s abilities to create engaging learning environments for fourth and fifth grade students, maximizing the use of cooperative learning activities and appropriate educational technology. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and inquiry-based teaching and learning are explored in both mathematics and science, as well as diagnostic techniques as they apply to the fourth and fifth grade setting. Special emphasis is given to safety in the science classroom and laboratory. Candidates apply the knowledge and skills obtained from this course in a planned sequence of professional field experiences with young adolescents in a fourth and fifth grade setting under the supervision of qualified university and school-based facility.
