Required Courses

These courses are designed to provide an understanding of basic issues regarding the nature of knowledge and reason, and introduce secular and religious approaches to these issues. Students also aquire familiarity with basic philosophical and theological texts. It is recommended that students take these courses before taking other courses in the major.
PHIL 1105 - Rhetoric and Reasoning
PHIL 2200 - Introduction to Philosophy
RELI 2230 - History of Christian Thought
PHIL 2230 - Philosophy of Religion
These courses investigate how various religions view each other, and how their disagreements can best be resolved or understood.
PHIL 2284 - Asian Philosophy
RELI 3300 - Judaism, Christianity, and Islam
An emphasis of the program is to gain understanding of the intersection between religion, philosophy, ethics and the political sphere. These courses examine the role of religious and secular approaches to the state and to the common good. Choose one course from among the following in addition to PHIL3320: Social and Political Philosophy.
PHIL 3360 - Social and Political Philosophy
PHIL 4200 - Metaphysics and Epistemology
This course is designed to enable students to bring together and to integrate various elements of the program. In the event that it may satisfy the Senior Seminar requirement, it must be taken to fulfill that requirement.
PHIL 4400 - Senior Project in Philosophy and Religion

Religious Texts (3 Credit Hours)

These courses introduce students to the content of major religious texts as well as some of the major theories and schools regarding their proper interpretation. Choose one from among the following.

Major Electives (3 Credit Hours)

Student may choose any course the following to complete the requirements for the major.

Any 3000 or 4000 level RELI or PHIL course not being used to fulfill another requirement.
HIST 3170 - Alternative Religions and Cults
HIST 3550 - Islam: Religion, Politics and Society
SOCI 3313 - Sociology of Religion: Monotheism
SOCI 3314 - Sociology of Religion: Polytheism and Eastern Religions
Additionally, students must take PHIL3320: Ethics in Public and Private LIfe to fulfill the GEP’s Ethics requirement.

All Philosophy and Religion students must earn a “C’ or higher in all required courses for the major.
