ARTS 3531 - Documentary Photography 1

A historical study of documentary photography will initiate the students understanding of documentary photography.  Truth and objectivity will be analyzed.  The art of visual story-telling will be cultivated by photographing several projects throughout the semester.  The student will explore the intents of communicating visually, as well as creating art.  Students will create an in-depth documentary project.  Classes will primarily be critique sessions, slide lectures, and group discussions.  Special attention will be given to editing, sequencing, and presentation.  Students will examine the cultural and personal factors that influence perception and how they affect the representation of the subject.  Still-photography, multimedia, and video documentary projects will be investigated.
